Aalen’s historic old town begins right across the street from ibis Styles Aalen. With its well preserved buildings, alleyways and small squares it’s a popular shopping destination for the whole region.
Theater der Stadt Aalen was established in the southern part of Aalen in 1991. Its small troupe and numerous guests present up to 500 shows per year.
Urweltmuseum Aalen is located in Aalen’s historic town hall building at the old market square. The museum was established in 1977 and is the largest municipal museum of its kind in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
The museum stands on what was the largest cavalry castrum (fort) ever by built by the Romans north of the Alpes. Today Limesmuseum displays many items from the 2nd century and depicts life at the Limes border fortifications under Roman rule. Large outdoor spaces are used for reconstructed buildings and even Roman war machines as well as statues.
Every two years it’s the site of the International Roman Days festival.
Called Aalener Sternwarte the observatory offers guided tours and lectures on a regular basis.
Built and used exclusively for soccer the stadium that today is called Scholz Arena has been in use since 1949. It was expanded and remodeled constantly and can now seat 14,500 guests. Local soccer team VfR Aalen uses it for their home games.
Just outside the city limits is the Limes-Thermen Aalen spa. Its healing mineral water is supplied by a 650m (2,130 feet) deep spring at a balmy 36°C (97°F . The spa not only offers several pools filled with the spring’s water but also a large sauna area, wellness treatments and a restaurant.
